It's bike vs bus right across the North! Transdev teams take to the road for lifesaving charity challenge27 March 2019
Two teams to race from Preston to Scarborough to raise money and awareness for CALM campaign against male suicide.
Two teams from bus operator Transdev Blazefield are now in training for a unique cross country charity challenge using bikes and buses to race across the North of England.
Comedy favourite Justin Moorhouse is backing both teams tackling the big race from Preston to Scarborough on Saturday 27 April, to raise money and awareness for male suicide charity CALM – the Campaign Against Living Miserably.
The route will take the competitors from west to east across the bus firm’s huge operating area, starting from Preston Bus Station in Lancashire, calling in at the company’s offices in Starbeck, near Harrogate, and – both teams hope – ending up at the seaside in Scarborough.
The five competitors are all based at Transdev’s Starbeck offices in Harrogate – with Marketing and Communications Manager Ben Mansfield and VAMOOZ Manager Rebecca Reeve-Burnett sticking to pedal power for the entire journey, while CEO Alex Hornby, Marketing and Communications Assistant Matt Harrison and Graphic Designer Mark Reeves will use the company’s buses to make the trip.
Stand-up comedy star Justin Moorhouse said: “Good luck to the two teams – I fancy the bike riders to win it because I think they’re geared up for this one, unlike their rivals on the buses – they must be preparing by having a long sit down and standing at the bus stop!
“I’ll certainly be sponsoring the teams taking part in this for a brilliant cause, and I hope more people will do the same. May the best team win!”
Transdev Blazefield CEO Alex Hornby said: “It’s about 120 miles by bike from Preston via Starbeck to Scarborough, and further still on the buses, so it’s going to be a real challenge for both teams.
“Ben and Rebecca are already in training almost every day – while the rest of us are refreshing our timetable and route knowledge to make sure we don’t miss the bus!
“As well as having fun and finding out who will be the winning team, this is all about raising money and awareness for CALM, the Campaign Against Living Miserably, which offers men support and information to prevent suicide, which is the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. CALM runs a nationwide hotline 365 days a year. It’s an amazing charity and we hope it will be the real winner as we cross the North by bus, and by bike.”
The Transdev teams are hoping to raise over £1,000 for CALM by completing the challenge. A dedicated Just Giving page is online now under the title “Bikes vs Buses” to receive pledges of support for the racers. justgiving.com/fundraising/bikesvsbuses
